Dear Reader,
Three years ago, Tomi Abe and I had a question we couldnât shake: how could the media do better for Africaâs future?
We didnât have a full answer then. We still donât, but weâve learned a lot since May 2023, and we want to share some of it with you.
Who we are, still
Susinsight is a research-driven media outlet covering sustainability journalism and intelligence across Africa. We publish deep dives, explainers, narratives, and intelligence briefs on the economic, social, and environmental trends shaping the continent. We step back from the daily news cycle to ask not just what is happening, but why it matters.
That hasnât changed. What has changed is the scale and the reach.
Three years in numbers
Since launching, weâve published across more than 1000 topics, from climate finance and food security to womenâs empowerment, digital infrastructure, and artisanal mining. Our topic index now spans hundreds of subjects tied to real stories and real places across the continent.
Across our website and social channels, we've reached an audience of over 20,000 people in more than a dozen countries, from Nigeria and Kenya to France, the United States, Singapore, China, and beyond. Some of our strongest readership has come from places we didn't originally target, which tells us the conversation around Africa's sustainability is genuinely global.
Pieces like our deep dive on Moroccan architectural design and our African Independence Dates resource are picking up consistent search traffic among our older content, which also tells us thereâs an audience that keeps finding us through what theyâre already looking for.
What weâve built since year two
Our contributor network has grown to over 10 writers and researchers, each focused on different thematic areas across the continent. That range shows in the work, from artisanal mining in the DRC to jazz economies in Cape Town to literacy programs in Nigeria.
We also took a close look at how we were running the platform and made some changes. We stepped back from our earlier registration and subscription model and rethought how Susinsight sustains itself. The direction weâre moving toward is partnerships, working directly with organisations whose goals align with ours. More on that is coming this week.
A new website

One of the bigger changes this year happened behind the scenes. We rebuilt the platform from scratch.
The previous system couldnât keep up with the volume and complexity of what weâd built. The content is all still there, but the structure around it is new. We rethought how sustainability is contextualised and how readers experience it. You can now browse by region, by SDG, by topic, by content category, or by world day events. Everything was thought through with the reader in mind, whether youâre a researcher, a policy person, or someone who just wants to understand whatâs happening in a particular part of the continent.
The newsletter remains the fastest and most direct way to stay connected with us. If youâre not already subscribed, thatâs the place to start.
What we do, and why itâs different
We donât break news. We donât chase clicks. Weâre not here to keep you scrolling.
We write for people who want to understand what is actually happening across Africa. People in policy, business, research, and civil society. And people who are simply curious about the continentâs future. Our journalism looks at systems, not individuals. It reports with honesty. It looks for solutions, not just problems.
Whatâs next
Weâre continuing to build Susdata, our data resource. Weâre working on more structured regional coverage across Central, East, North, Southern, and West Africa. Audio is something weâre still working toward. Watch for that in the near future.
We want to hear from you. What topics do you want us to go deeper on? Whatâs missing from the way Africaâs sustainability story gets told?
Three years in, weâre still asking the same question we started with. That feels right.
Thank you for being here.
